This study critically analyzes the historical development of the documentary hypothesis related to the authorship of the Pentateuch. It systematically examines the academic trends of Pentateuch research from Astruc's early documentary hypothesis to Wellhausen's four-source theory and subsequent scholars' critical approaches. In particular, it critically examines the methodological limitations of the documentary hypothesis and recent research trends, seeking a new hermeneutical perspective on the formation of the Pentateuch.
