불교의 중국 전래와 위진남북조 시대의 불교 발전: 도교와의 융합을 중심으로

본 연구는 불교가 인도에서 창시되어 중국으로 전래되는 과정과 중국 내에서의 발전 양상을 체계적으로 분석한다. 특히 위진남북조 시대를 중심으로 불교가 기존의 중국 사상, 특히 도교와 어떻게 융합되었는지를 조사한다. 후한 시기 번역불교의 등장부터 구마라집의 정확한 번역 방식의 도입까지, 불교가 중국 사회에 수용되는 과정에서 격의불교라는 독특한 형태가 나타났음을 보여준다. 또한 삼국시대와 서진, 남북조 시대에 걸쳐 불교가 정치적 필요와 종교적 신앙이 결합되어 어떻게 확산되었는지를 분석한다. 북조의 불교가 정치목적화된 반면, 남조의 불교는 교학적 발전을 이루었으며, 이러한 이원적 발전이 이후 중국 불교의 독특한 특성을 형성하게 되었음을 결론짓는다.

This study systematically analyzes the process of Buddhism's transmission from India to China and its development within Chinese society. Focusing particularly on the Wei-Jin and Northern-Southern Dynasties period, it examines how Buddhism was fused with existing Chinese thought, especially Daoism. From the emergence of translated Buddhism in the Later Han period to the introduction of Kumarajiva's accurate translation methods, the study demonstrates how a unique form of Buddhism called Geyi Buddhism emerged during the process of Buddhism's acceptance in Chinese society. It further analyzes how Buddhism spread through a combination of political necessity and religious faith across the Three Kingdoms, Western Jin, and Northern-Southern Dynasties periods. The conclusion notes that while Northern Dynasty Buddhism became politicized, Southern Dynasty Buddhism achieved doctrinal development, and this dual development shaped the distinctive characteristics of subsequent Chinese Buddhism.
