루이스 칸의 킴벨 미술관 설계 프로세스 분석: 스케치를 통한 건축 설계 방법론 연구

본 연구는 20세기 대표 건축가 루이스 칸의 킴벨 미술관 설계 과정에서 나타난 스케치를 분석하여 그의 건축 설계 방법론을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 칸의 초기 정방형 계획안에서 직사각형, H-형, C-형 평면으로 진화하는 과정을 시간 순서에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 칸은 기본 매스 계획에서 출발하여 건축주의 요구사항, 대지의 물리적 조건, 시설 이용 방식을 점진적으로 평면에 적용하며 체계적으로 설계를 진행하였음을 확인하였다. 특히 자연 채광의 개념, 볼트 구조의 모듈 구성, 공간 배치 등이 초기 스케치에서부터 최종안까지 단계적으로 구체화되는 과정을 보여준다. 칸의 스케치 기반 설계 방법론은 오류 발견 시 신속한 수정이 가능하며, 추상적 개념을 현실적 해결 방법으로 전환하는 효율적인 설계 프로세스를 제시한다.

This study aims to elucidate Louis Kahn's architectural design methodology by analyzing sketches from his design process for the Kimbell Art Museum. The evolution from initial square floor plans through rectangular, H-shaped, and C-shaped configurations was analyzed chronologically. The research reveals that Kahn systematically progressed his design from basic mass planning, progressively incorporating client requirements, site-specific physical conditions, and spatial utilization methods into the floor plans. Notably, concepts of natural lighting, vault structure modulation, and spatial arrangement were progressively refined from initial sketches to the final design. Kahn's sketch-based design methodology demonstrates an efficient design process that enables rapid modification upon error detection and transforms abstract concepts into practical solutions.
